Gering Mayor Ed Mayo says the city needs to work aggressively to get a new landfill sited.
Gering council members have approved an agreement for a 6 year
option to purchase more than 460 acres of land from the Weinhold family
east of Gering. Now the regulatory process begins and the testing and
analysis of soil and water at the proposed site.
Mayo, our guest on KNEB's News Extra program, says even
though there are new rules, there is "an urgency" to get the new
landfill sited despite the recent construction of cell six at the old
landfill. Mayo notes if the area has a few major hail storms, the
planned lifespan of cell six will be shortened.
Mayo says he believes the new landfill can get sited in six
years, but it also could take much longer if there are regulatory
delays.
